Signs Your Pet May Need Orthopaedic Surgery

The early signs of musculoskeletal problems can be hard to spot, but identifying them as soon as possible can prevent long-term damage. These include:

● Limping or lameness in one or more limbs
● Stiffness, especially after rest or in cold weather
● Reluctance to move, run, play, or climb stairs
● Difficulty jumping on furniture or into cars
● Crying out in pain or changes in behaviour due to discomfort

Common Orthopaedic Procedures

We offer a range of advanced orthopaedic surgeries, tailored to suit the needs of cats and dogs of all sizes:

Cruciate Ligament Repair (ACL surgery): One of the most common surgeries in dogs, this procedure repairs torn ligaments in the knee joint. We offer both TTO and DeAngelis procedures.
Fracture Repair: Whether from an accident or fall, we stabilise broken bones using surgical pins, plates, or external fixation.
Hip Dysplasia Surgery: Treatments like femoral head osteotomy (FHO) help relieve pain and restore function in pets with hip problems.
Luxating Patella Surgery: Corrects kneecaps that slip out of place, often seen in small dog breeds.

All procedures are performed by an experienced orthopaedic veterinary surgeon using modern anaesthesia protocols and monitoring systems.

Dr Kay graduated from the University of Queensland in 1986. She worked as a mixed practitioner for many years but her early passion for surgery has now become her main focus. She has over 30 years of experience and extra training in orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery. She has spent many years lecturing and teaching surgical skills at James Cook University in Townsville. She has taught most of the vets at Vet2UrPet when they were students at JCU 😊

Dr Kay now visits Vet2UrPet monthly to help train our upcoming young surgeons in more complex surgical procedures & perform more difficult procedures with our vets. She enjoys mentoring younger veterinarians, nurses and visiting students. In her non-work time she enjoys living off the grid on a property with her husband, 3 cats and cattle and enjoys mountain biking and staying fit enough to try and keep up with Dr Nell’s three young kids!

Dr Bennett Moncrieff – Dr Bennett has had a special interest in orthopaedic surgery and has been trained under Dr Kay for the past 5 years. During this time he has become a confident, caring and efficient orthopaedic surgeon who is passionate about his patient’s long-term well-being and comfort.
