Meet the team behind Vet2UrPet Townsville!
Since I could remember, I have always wanted to be a vet. I grew up in South East Queensland and started pursuing my interests in animal studies after high school.
I completed a Bachelor of Applied Science specialising in Veterinary Technology and Animal Production at The University of Queensland, Gatton.
Having worked as a veterinary nurse in a country town in WA, I had the opportunity to work with all types of animals including camels, llamas, chickens, horses and small animals. I have travelled and camped throughout Australia and witnessed the magnificent wildlife the Australian outback has to offer. I have also travelled throughout Southern Africa and South America which exposed me to amazing wildlife and motivated my ambition to become a veterinarian.
I began my Veterinary Science studies in Perth WA and finished the degree at James Cook University Townsville. Upon graduation, I worked for a local Townsville vet clinic and then at JCU Veterinary Hospital both in general practice. I particularly enjoy working with cats and dogs, chickens and avian species as well as small mammals.
Addicted to the gorgeous weather and outdoor activities that North Queensland has to offer, my fiancé Shaun and I have settled in Townsville and consider ourselves locals. I enjoy travelling, figure-skating, mountain biking, snorkelling, fishing and touch football. I have a ball-crazy Jack Russel named Roaty and a loving kitten named Finnius.
Dr Pooja graduated from the University of Sydney and spent a few years working in busy mixed practices in regional Victoria and South Australia, before deciding it was time to move to warmer climes.
She joined our team in January 2018 and is thoroughly enjoying sunny Townsville and its laid back locals. Dr Pooja loves all aspects of small animal medicine and looks forward to meeting your furbabies in the comfort of your own home (or in our new clinic – whatever you prefer!)
Maddie grew up in Charters Towers where her love for animals started at a young age with her two gorgeous chihuahuas and numerous cockatiels. She came to Townsville to start her Veterinary Science degree at James Cook University and has developed a keen interest in anything weird and wonderful!
She loves to help sick birds, small animals, reptiles, and of course the furry family members. She has had the privilege to be able to complete placement with several well-known professionals in the field including avian specialist Dr. Bob Donely at the University of Queensland.
Maddie recently joined the Vet2UrPet Townsville team after getting married locally and is excited to have the opportunity to see pets in their own environment away from the stress of a veterinary clinic.
Maddie lives with her husband, two Border Collies called Jake and Ellie, and two cockatiels called Sir Birdington Beaks and Lady Daenarys Wingford (mother of dragons).
I started with the Vet2UrPet team February 2018 as the full time Veterinary Nurse. I had moved back from Melbourne where I had spent a couple of years studying my certificate as well as travelling around Victoria. In 2014 I was extremely lucky to be offered a casual student veterinary nursing position in a small country vet clinic in rural Victoria, I spent two years there before I had to leave my clinic to be closer to my TAFE. During TAFE I completed placement at a variety of both large and small clinics including a university hospital. Once I had finished my studies I was working part time in a Melbourne Vet Clinic before moving to Townsville to join Vet2UrPet.
When I’m not working I enjoy spending time with my two beautiful dogs, Krystal a senior Golden Retriever and Codie a young happy Labrador. I also own a rescue cockatiel named Jo and a fishtank of tropical fish. As well hang out with my pets I play netball, study, and like being bundled upon the couch with the dogs watching Netflix.
I am often on the Vet2UrPet Facebook page replying to clients, posting the latest clinic updates, handy client information as well as some adorable client photos. I am often coming into the clinic after hours to check on the hospital patients as well as holding the after-hours emergency phone. I enjoy mentoring our nursing and school students, reception and going out with the vets to meet some lovely patients and their equally lovely owners. I love working with the team at Vet2UrPet and couldn’t imagine working with a more fantastic team!!!
I started my Vet Nursing career in Brisbane in 2008 working with small animals and reptiles, from there moved down to Adelaide and gained experience in the emergency centre. In 2013 moved back to North Qld to be closer to family, I have worked with the JCU emergency doing shift work gaining much more experience in the emergency field and nursing critical patients. I joined the team at Vet2urpet in April 2018 keeping busy with Nursing, accounts and the general running of the clinic.
Outside of work I keep busy with my 4 children, 2 dogs – Coco the Jack Russel, Bear the Sharpei, Woody & Oscar the cats, Bruce Wayne the Bearded Dragon, Falcor the spotted python and Dashy the lorikeet. Also involved with church activities, love camping and 4wd in my jeep.
I am currently studying my diploma of Counselling to help with awareness in the Veterinary field with compassion fatigue.
